While ipe is the most popular type of tropical hardwood, there are other varieties of wood that have similar characteristics. Some varieties are arguably as beautiful as ipe but even more durable with a lesser price tag. Choose from FSC® massaranduba, FSC® cumaru, or mahogany.
Massaranduba (pronounced Ma-Sa-Ran-Doo-bah) is a hardwood native to South America. It is also known by the names Brazilian Redwood and Bulletwood. Its botanical name is Manilkara bidentata. Massaranduba grows widespread around Central and South America and in a variety of conditions. It is one of the most beautiful and hardest woods in the world with a beautiful red velvet look. Twice as strong as California Redwood and even stronger than ipe, massaranduba naturally resists decay and insects. These properties make this wood an ideal material for decking, terraces, and other outdoor walking surfaces. Our FSC® massaranduba hardwood is responsibly harvested from managed forests to provide a truly sustainable resource.

Genuine Mahogany represents a new category of decking from a plantation grown source that can be used for any decking needs. Its rot and mildew resistance combined with being one of the most stable timbers on the market makes it perfect for docks and near-water decks. It’s ideal for high above ground and close to ground decks due to its intrinsic hardiness. It can also be used for wooden patios. Genuine Mahogany’s capability to accept stains, oils, and other finishes mean that it can be preserved and accented to meet absolutely every need.
All of our products are fully legal and one of only a few “Green” sustainable plantation grown hardwood decking products available in the United States today. Plantation grown means our product was planted as a crop for the purpose it is serving, to be a building product. End users and dealers who sell other exotic species are unknowingly and/or willingly supporting widespread harvesting of Natural/Virgin Rain Forests all over the world. Our mahogany was planted after World War II for the exact purpose of this current enterprise. Also, it is sustainable due to strict regulations by the Fijian government. Production has passed the California Wildland-Urban Interface (W.U.I.) standard.
Cumaru (aka Brazilian Teak) gives a rich display of golden tan to reddish brown colors and dark grain accents. Many people mistake it for ipe hardwood but cumaru is slightly more reddish tone. With a very long life – 50+ years without preservatives, cumaru is naturally resistant to rot, decay and insect attack. Our FSC® cumaru hardwood is responsibly harvested from managed forests to provide a truly sustainable resource.
