Project Overview
Residential: Backyard Getaway
Location: McMinnville, OR
This project features a stone deck system installed over a traditional wood joist structure. In this case, the deck includes newly poured concrete footings and fresh joists, but this same stone deck system is equally effective for rejuvenating older decks, especially when the homeowner grows tired of replacing rotted or weathered wood.
A Better Way to Build a Deck
Using the Silca Grate Stone Deck Installation, it’s easy to upgrade from wood decking to a stone, concrete, or porcelain surface. Whether the deck is two feet off the ground or twelve, the process is consistent:
- Prepare or inspect wood joist support system
- Install HDG Silca Grates over or between joists
- Place your chosen decking material over the top
- Use U-TABS-FLAT and U-PAD-GROUND to maintain spacing between pavers, promoting drainage and helping prevent wind uplift
Paving Pattern: Modular Layout
For this Silca Grate stone deck installation, the concrete pavers were installed in a modular pattern. This layout blends different paver sizes into a repeating yet visually varied design. It gives the appearance of randomness while still following a structured repeat, which makes installation efficient and aesthetically balanced. Patterns like this work well to avoid long, continuous seams and provide a refined look that complements a range of architectural styles.
This project is a great example of how HDG’s stone deck system enables durable, attractive alternatives to traditional wood decking.
