Innovating with Granite Blocks

How can ordinary public spaces become extraordinary?

The answer lies in the vibrant installation at the Kirkland Transit Center, where colorful granite stone blocks redefine the very concept of functional art. This stunning public art display features a variety of granite colors and finishes, creating a visually striking and durable design. Each carefully crafted block adds texture, depth, and creativity, making the transit center not just a functional space but a community landmark. This project demonstrates the endless possibilities of using colorful granite stone blocks in public art.

Project Name: Kirkland Transit Center
Type: Municipal Public Functional Art
Location: Kirkland, Washington
Components: Granite and Basalt Natural Stone

Public Art with Dual Purpose

The colorful granite blocks bring both form and function to the public space. For those hurrying up the stairs on their way elsewhere, these blocks might seem like mere public art. Yet for those who arrive early, late, or are simply waiting, the granite blocks transform into functional, organic seating areas—inviting people to pause and connect with the environment.

Functional and Aesthetic Impact

The granite stone blocks seamlessly complement the transit hub’s functionality and design aesthetic. Crafted from natural granite and basalt, these blocks enhance the beauty and legacy of the space while offering durability and low-maintenance benefits. These blocks elevate the transit hub from a simple commuter stop to a community landmark where art meets purpose.

Variety of Stone Types and Colors

The Kirkland Transit Center showcases a stunning selection of basalt and granite, each chosen for its unique texture and complementary tones. Athens Red Granite’s deep red crystalline structure pairs beautifully with the brilliant Cristallo White Granite, while the dark richness of Black Pearl Basalt offers contrast. Bigio Grey Granite unites the design, seamlessly integrating the vibrant stones with the project’s concrete foundation. Each large-scale granite and basalt block was precisely cut to achieve angled faces before being enhanced with a variety of finishes.

Natural Stone Components:

Bush-Hammered Finish

This lightly hammered texture creates a uniform, granulated surface that balances form and function. The finish enhances the natural beauty of the stone, offering enough texture for grip while remaining smooth and elegant to the touch. Its tactile quality invites exploration while ensuring the stone’s strength and durability. Explore our Lychee Stone Finish to discover another unique stone finish similar to bush-hammered.

Polished Finish

This glossy, elegant finish amplifies the natural features of the stone, particularly its crystalline structure, making each piece stand out. The polished surface is highly reflective, capturing nearby details like grout lines and adjacent stones. While stunning, it’s reserved for decorative surfaces rather than stepping or seating areas, as it lacks the traction needed for safety.

Adze Finish and Adze-Finished Edges

The adze finish features tactile rows created through a cross-axe hand technique, adding both visual interest and texture. On edges, the adze finish is applied perpendicularly, not only enhancing decoration but also serving a functional purpose by protecting corners and edges from chipping.

The adze finish not only adds visual interest but strengthens the stone by protecting corners and edges from damage, ensuring the longevity of this public art installation.
