Project Name: Terrace Makeover

Residential Project: Buzon Pedestals and Porcelain Pavers
Location: Highwood, Illinois

Terrace Makeover Project Overview

This residential terrace makeover replaces tiles installed over concrete with a raised terrace made of porcelain pavers on the decking surface and screwjack pedestals below. The height of the decking surface was raised to eliminate the abnormal step between the door threshold and decking surface. The new design also eliminates the stone perimeter with porcelain pavers that meet flush the surrounding wall. See the before and after photos.

Buzon Pedestals Support Porcelain Pavers

What’s beneath the decking surface? Buzon adjustable height and slope-correcting pedestals are holding up the porcelain pavers on this terrace. If you are new to screwjack pedestals or want a refresher visit this one page Buzon learning resource.

Project Details

This residential terrace makeover uses Buzon PB-3 pedestals with 3mm spacer tabs on top of each pedestal head. Spacer tabs regulate the spacing between pavers, ensure alignment, and water passage from the surface to the substrate. Precipitation passes through the gaps between pavers to the substrate below and on to the drains. Even though the substrate is designed to slope to the drains the decking surface remains perfectly level for people and furniture. To achieve a level decking surface this project uses BC-PH5 slope correctors under each pedestal.

Pedestals Conceal Unsightly Services

Using Buzon pedestals in raised flooring applications enables designers to hide services in plain site beneath the decking surface. Imagine terraces or rooftop decks of any size being able to hide drains, electrical wiring and conduit, irrigation lines, and other services. Hiding services improves design aesthetic. In commercial venues keeping services hidden increases public safety by minimizing trip hazards and reducing the chances for vandalism. Ultimately, the guests who enjoy these spaces have better experiences.

If I had known about screw-jack pedestals earlier in my career I absolutely would have put them everywhere. I like that you can create comfortable level surfaces for people right over the top of sloped surfaces designed to drain. I also like being able to hide irrigation, plumbing, and electrical services below the surface. This is much more elegant than running conduit everywhere.
